How a Positive Mindset Can Move Boulders — and Get You All the Way to San Diego
When you are in the middle of a crisis, sometimes it can be hard to imagine that there might be a light — and I mean a BIG light — at the end of the tunnel. At those moments having a “positive mindset” might be the last thing that you’re thinking of.
That was definitely true in my case.
When I got the call that my daughter Schuyler had sustained multiple life threatening injuries from a falling boulder, never in a million years did I dream that she and I would be on personal development stage barely three years later.
And yet, life can be miraculous, can’t it?
Not just in the “things” that it throws our way. I’m talking about the powerful growth and a-ha moments that we can experience along the way.
For me, some of those moments came as I stood next to Schuyler’s bed in that Miami ICU.
Suddenly, all of the things that I had been beating myself up for became not so important after all.
And the shortcomings that I saw in myself slowly became a blanket of “enough ness”.
In the midst of this crisis, I ironically started to consider that I just might be “worthy”.
I began to see the profound beauty in those “horrible” experiences in my life that I had already lived through — and that had brought with them some important lessons in strength and resilience.
This crazy boulder brought with it a gentle willingness to forgive…
…to forgive those people who had caused me such pain in my life…
…to forgive myself for not being where I “thought” I should be…
… to forgive life for times of sorrow…
…to forgive God for making this life easier and (yes) even to forgive this crazy boulder that might threaten the future of my child.
The more that I focused on those moments in time, the more that I could gently let go of.
Out of our tragedies sometimes come great gifts.
Having the opportunity to share our story with others and to life coach and train clients in harnessing the power of a deliberate positive mindset has indeed been such a gift.
So yes, last month, Schuyler — who “miraculously” survived in spite of mountains of medical precedent that predicted that she would not — joined me on stage in San Diego as the life changing THINK BETTER LIVE BETTER event hosted by best selling authors Angel and Marc Chernoff.
If you find yourself in this moment in the middle of a storm, I would urge you hold tight.
Storms do pass and beyond these storms lie rainbows and sunny beaches and powerful purpose that you may not yet be able to imagine.
As Schuyler and I bear witness to, everything is possible when you expect the “I’m Possible” to emerge from the daunting impossible.
And there was a time when the realists believed the world to be flat, when man wouldn’t have aspired to walk on the moon, when everyone “knew” that humans can’t fly… and on and on and on…
Dare to create your own truth. Dare to move mountains — and boulders.
Embolden yourself to be all that is fully and completely you.
Your stage is waiting. All it needs is YOU!
